Handbrake Guide

Welcome to my guide for using Handbrake to convert DVDs to play on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Please follow each page in order to use the guide!

    Contents

  • This page: Download required software
  • Page 1: Rip a DVD to your computer with Handbrake
  • Page 2: Find a cover image for your film
  • Page 3: Add your film to iTunes
  • Page 4: Set the film information in iTunes
  • Page 5: Synchronise film to you iPod, iPhone or other device

Note: If your computer is quite new, it may be that you need to play a DVD once on your computer’s DVD player before you can rip it with Handbrake – this sets the region code on your computer. A 99% chance that this won’t affect you but Handbrake won’t copy your DVD if this hasn’t been done.

Download Software

First up, you’ll need to download and install the required software if you haven’t already.

Download DVD decrypting software from http://www.dvd43.com (DVD43 for Windows) or http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html (VLC for Mac) (other suitable software is available).

DVD43 (Windows): This will add a smiley face to the status bar (bottom right). Normally it’s a yellow face. Insert a DVD and the face will turn green when it’s ready (which means you can go ahead and use Handbrake). If the face goes red there is a problem.
VLC (Mac): As long as VLC is stored in the standard root Applications folder (not the user Applications) then the decrypting works in the background, so you just go ahead and use Handbrake without issue.

Download the latest version of Handbrake from http://handbrake.fr. Install and open Handbrake.

This guide was written using the Mac version, though I have tried to include information for Mac and Windows users. Always ensure you are using the most recent versions of your software!
